Headache Treatment

Headache is one of the most common health problems both in our country and worldwide. Factors such as a busy daily lifestyle, stress, irregular sleep, and prolonged use of technological devices are steadily increasing the frequency of headaches. While headaches may sometimes be a simple sign of fatigue, they can also indicate serious underlying brain conditions. Therefore, headaches that are frequent, long-lasting, or progressively worsening must be evaluated by a specialist.

Prof. Dr. Ömür Günaldı, who has conducted significant studies in neurosurgery, emphasizes that treating a headache without proper diagnosis may be insufficient, and the underlying cause must first be identified.

What Is a Headache and How Does It Occur?

A headache is defined as pain, pressure, tightness, or throbbing felt in the head. The brain itself does not feel pain. Headaches occur due to the involvement of blood vessels, nerves, muscles, and membranes surrounding the brain.

Headaches may be felt on one side of the head, both sides, the back of the head (neck area), or the forehead. In some individuals, they are mild and short-lived, while in others they may be severe and last for hours or even days. The duration, severity, and nature of the headache provide important clues for diagnosis.

Types of Headaches

Headaches are generally divided into two main groups: primary and secondary headaches. This classification is essential for treatment planning.

Primary Headaches

Primary headaches occur without an underlying disease and are the most common type.

Migraine is one of the most well-known primary headaches. It is usually felt on one side of the head and has a throbbing nature. It may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. Migraine attacks can significantly affect daily life.

Tension-type headache is the most common type. It typically presents as a feeling of pressure or tightness on both sides of the head. Stress, fatigue, and prolonged desk work can trigger this type.

Cluster headache is less common but very severe. It is usually characterized by intense pain around the eye and is often described as unbearable.

Secondary Headaches

Secondary headaches occur due to an underlying medical condition and may be more serious.

Brain tumors, brain hemorrhage, brain infections, and vascular diseases are among the most important causes of secondary headaches. Therefore, newly developed and progressively worsening headaches must be carefully evaluated.

What Causes Headaches?

There are many factors that can cause headaches. Daily lifestyle habits are among the most common causes.

Stress is one of the leading causes of headaches. A busy work schedule, psychological pressure, and emotional tension can trigger headaches. Lack of sleep and irregular sleep patterns also contribute. Headaches are more frequent in individuals who do not get enough sleep.

Dehydration may also lead to headaches, as insufficient fluid intake can affect brain vessels.

Additionally, conditions such as migraine, sinusitis, cervical disc herniation, and high blood pressure may cause headaches.

More serious causes include brain tumors and brain hemorrhage. Therefore, the cause of headaches should always be investigated.

What Are the Symptoms of Headaches?

Headaches can present in different ways. The pain may be throbbing or pressure-like. Some patients may experience nausea, while others may have visual disturbances.

Dizziness, sensitivity to light, and sensitivity to sound may also accompany headaches.

A sudden onset headache described as the “worst headache of life” may indicate a serious condition and requires urgent medical evaluation.

How Is Headache Diagnosed?

Diagnosing a headache requires a detailed evaluation. The doctor first listens to the patient’s medical history. Information such as when the pain started, how long it lasts, how often it occurs, and what triggers it is very important.

During neurological examination, the nervous system is assessed. If necessary, imaging methods such as MRI or CT scans are used. These methods are especially important for detecting serious conditions like brain tumors or hemorrhage.

How Is Headache Treated?

Headache treatment is planned according to the underlying cause. Each type of headache requires a different treatment approach, making accurate diagnosis essential.

Medication is the most commonly used method. Pain relievers, migraine medications, and muscle relaxants can help reduce symptoms.

In migraine treatment, painkillers alone may not be sufficient. Preventive medications may also be required.

Lifestyle changes play an important role in headache management. Regular sleep, healthy nutrition, and stress management can significantly reduce headaches.

Surgical Treatment for Headaches

Some headaches may require surgical treatment, especially those caused by brain tumors or vascular diseases.

After surgical treatment, headaches often decrease or disappear completely.

How to Prevent Headaches

Certain precautions can help prevent headaches. Getting regular sleep, drinking enough water, and avoiding stress are key factors.

Prolonged computer use can increase headaches, so taking regular breaks is important.

What Happens If Headaches Are Not Treated?

Untreated headaches may become chronic. Chronic headaches can significantly reduce quality of life and negatively affect both work and social life.

Therefore, headaches should not be underestimated.

Which Department Treats Headaches?

Neurology and neurosurgery specialists are involved in the treatment of headaches. In some cases, a multidisciplinary approach may be required.

Headache is a very common health problem in society. Although it is often caused by simple factors, it may sometimes indicate serious diseases. Therefore, headaches that are long-lasting, severe, or different in nature should always be evaluated by a specialist. With proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment, headaches can be effectively controlled, and patients’ quality of life can be significantly improved.
